Flights to the Maldives

Flights to the Maldives have increased in availability as the Maldives has increased in popularity among people from all over the world.  Whether you live in Europe, the Americas, Asia or Australasia, flying to the Maldives is possible either in one single flight or with a simple connection.
International flights to the Maldives began operations in 1966 when the international airport, originally called Hulhule Airport was opened to the public.  Later in 1981, the airport changed its name to Male International Airport and was officially inaugurated.

Several other airports in the Maldives offer domestic flights within the Maldives, which allow people, both locals and visitors, to travel quickly around the country.
The other airports in the Maldives are Gan International Airport, Hanimaadhoo Airport, Kaadedhdoo Airport and Kadhdoo Airport.  Despite its name, Gan International Airport does not offer international flights from the Maldives, although these are expected to start soon.

Flights from Austria to the Maldives
Just over 13,000 Austrians fly to the Maldives each year, accounting for two percent of all visitors to the Maldives.  To satisfy this demand, visitors can take direct flights from Austria to the Maldives, or they can take indirect flights, connecting in Europe or Asia.
Austrian Airlines has one direct flight from Vienna (VIE) to the Maldives each week.

Thomson Airways has a flight to the Maldives from London Gatwick (LGW) once a week and from Manchester (MAN) once a week.  The day of the week varies with the time of year.
Sri Lankan Airlines offers both direct and indirect flights to the Maldives each week from London Heathrow (LHR) to the Maldives (MLE).  The indirect flights go via Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Flights from London to the Maldives last 10 hours and 5 minutes and the return flight from the Maldives to London lasts 11 hours.
There are also several airlines that offer non-direct flights from the UK to the Maldives, connecting in countries such as United Arab Emirates, Malaysia Singapore and Saudi Arabia.  These airlines include Emirates, Sri Lankan Airlines and Qatar Airways

Air Berlin flies direct to Male from both Munich (MUC) and Dusseldorf (DUS).  The frequency of these flights depends on the time of year, but generally there are 2 direct flights per week from Dusseldorf and 1 direct flight per week from Munich.  Condor flies to Male from Frankfurt (FRA) three times per week.
