Flights to the Maldives

Flights to the Maldives have increased in availability as the Maldives has increased in popularity among people from all over the world.  Whether you live in Europe, the Americas, Asia or Australasia, flying to the Maldives is possible either in one single flight or with a simple connection.

International flights to the Maldives began operations in 1966 when the international airport, originally called Hulhule Airport was opened to the public.  Later in 1981, the airport changed its name to Male International Airport and was officially inaugurated.

Several other airports in the Maldives offer domestic flights within the Maldives, which allow people, both locals and visitors, to travel quickly around the country.

The other airports in the Maldives are Gan International Airport, Hanimaadhoo Airport, Kaadedhdoo Airport and Kadhdoo Airport.  Despite its name, Gan International Airport does not offer international flights from the Maldives, although these are expected to start soon.

Flights from Austria to the Maldives

Just over 13,000 Austrians fly to the Maldives each year, accounting for two percent of all visitors to the Maldives.  To satisfy this demand, visitors can take direct flights from Austria to the Maldives, or they can take indirect flights, connecting in Europe or Asia.

Austrian Airlines has one direct flight from Vienna (VIE) to the Maldives each week.

A direct flight from Austria to the Maldives is about 9 hours long.

There are also several airlines that offer non-direct flights from Austria to the Maldives, connecting in countries such as the UK, Germany and Switzerland in Europe and in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia in Asia.

Flights from France to the Maldives

French tourists are the fifth most common visitors to the Maldives.  With around 48,000 people arriving on flights from France to the Maldives each year, French visitors account for around 7 percent of all visitors to the Maldives.  There are many choices when choosing your flight from France to the Maldives, on both direct and indirect flights.

XL Airways France has direct flights to the Maldives twice a week from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG).

Direct flights from Paris to the Maldives last 10 hours, with the return flight slightly longer due to headwinds.

There are many other routes that will take you from France to the Maldives, if you are willing to take an indirect flight.  You might consider flying through the UK, Germany or Italy if you prefer to connect in Europe, or you can connect in Asia or the Middle East by flying through Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates or Malaysia.

Flights from the UK to the Maldives

With around 115,000 British visitors to the Maldives each year, the UK accounts for around 17 percent of all visitors to the Maldives.  There are several airlines offering direct flights from the UK to the Maldives.

British Airways offers direct flights to the Maldives from London Gatwick (LGW) three times a week.

Monarch Airlines operates flights to the Maldives from London Gatwick (LGW), but flights can only be booked as part of Monarch’s package holidays.

Thomson Airways has a flight to the Maldives from London Gatwick (LGW) once a week and from Manchester (MAN) once a week.  The day of the week varies with the time of year.

Sri Lankan Airlines offers both direct and indirect flights to the Maldives each week from London Heathrow (LHR) to the Maldives (MLE).  The indirect flights go via Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Flights from London to the Maldives last 10 hours and 5 minutes and the return flight from the Maldives to London lasts 11 hours.

There are also several airlines that offer non-direct flights from the UK to the Maldives, connecting in countries such as United Arab Emirates, Malaysia Singapore and Saudi Arabia.  These airlines include Emirates, Sri Lankan Airlines and Qatar Airways

Flights from Russia to the Maldives

With around 49,000 Russian visitors to the Maldives each year, Russia makes around 7 percent of all tourists visiting the Maldives.  All of the direct flights to the Maldives from Russia are charter flights, operated by Aeroflot and Transaero and these flights are seasonal.

The flight from Russia to the Maldives lasts 8 hours and 21 minutes.

For scheduled flights from Russia to the Maldives, you will have to make a connection.  Most flights from Russia to the Maldives connect in the Middle East and Asia, in countries like the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Saudi Arabia.  These airlines include Emirates, Sri Lankan Airlines and Qatar Airways.

Flights from Italy to the Maldives
With just over 103,000 Italian visitors to the Maldives each year, Italians are the second most common visitors to the Maldives, accounting for around 15 percent of all tourists visiting the Maldives.  All of the directflights to the Maldives from Italy are charter flights, operated by Blue Panorama Airlines, Meridiana (operated by Eurofly) and Neos and these flights are seasonal.  The flights leave from Milan, Rome and Bologna Airports.

For scheduled flights from Italy to the Maldives, you will have to make a connection.  Most direct flights from Italy to the Maldives connect in Europe (the UK), the Middle East or Asia, in countries like the United Arab Emirates, Singapore and Saudi Arabia.  These airlines include Emirates, United and Qatar Airways.

Flights from Germany to the Maldives With around 70,000 German visitors to the Maldives each year, Germans make up a little over 10 percent of all visitors to the Maldives, so it is not surprising that there are several direct flights from Germany to the Maldives. Air Berlin flies direct to Male from both Munich (MUC) and Dusseldorf (DUS).  The frequency of these flights depends on the time of year, but generally there are 2 direct flights per week from Dusseldorf and 1 direct flight per week from Munich.  Condor flies to Male from Frankfurt (FRA) three times per week. A direct flight from Germany to the Maldives is about 10 hours long. There are also several airlines that offer non-direct flights from Germany to the Maldives, connecting in countries such as United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.  These airlines include Emirates and Qatar Airways.
