Entire Maldives cabinet resigns

Nasheed's privatisation plans have failed to win the approval of opposition MPs [AFP]
The Maldives' entire cabinet has resigned en masse after the opposition threatened to bring a parliamentary vote of no confidence against every minister.

The 13-member cabinet said on Tuesday that it could no longer work with the opposition-controlled majlis, or parliament, the office of Mohamed Nasheed, the president, announced on Tuesday.
"The majlis is preventing cabinet ministers from performing their legal obligations," Nasheed said in a statement.

"Majlis members are behaving against the spirit and the letter of the constitution."

Nasheed will remain in office despite the resignation of his cabinet.
Husnu Suood, the attorney general, said it was becoming difficult to govern the archipelago in the Indian Ocean.

"Every passing week, there is another attempt by opposition MPs to wrestle more control from the executive," Suood said.

"They are making the country ungovernable."
There was no immediate comment from the opposition on the resignations.
Privatisation plans

The opposition has resisted an ambitious privatisation programme proposed by Nasheed, who came to power in 2008 as the first democratically elected leader in the Indian Ocean atoll nation known for its upmarket tourism.
"The cabinet was fed up," a government official said.

"They could not make any headway with the parliament which was out to block them at every step of the way. They threatened to bring no confidence motions against every minister."
He said a motion was to be taken up Wednesday against one of the ministers and the mass resignation had blocked the move. Political sources said Nasheed could re-appoint the cabinet.
Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) enjoys the support of a maximum of 32 MPs in the 77-member assembly, while the opposition Maldivian People's Party (DRP) has more than 40.
The DRP of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has remained the largest single party even though he lost to Nasheed in the 2008 elections.
Nasheed's popularity at home has waned as he struggles in the face of parliamentary resistance to deliver promised political and economic changes.
Endangered nation

Nasheed's profile abroad has soared, however, thanks to stunts aimed at attracting global attention to global warming and its impact on the islands of his low-lying nation.
In October last year, Nasheed and the government held a widely-publicised underwater cabinet meeting to highlight their plight ahead of the UN conference on climate change in Copenhagen.
More than 80 per cent of the country's land, composed of coral islands scattered over an area about 850km across the equator, is less than one metre above sea level.
The executive and the legislature in the Maldives are elected directly by the people at two separate polls.

Nasheed's term ends in October 2013 while the parliament can be in office until May 2014.

Male’ International Airport will be a “state-of-the-art, 21st Century airport of which every Maldivian can be proud

29/6/2010- President Nasheed has said that the new Male’ International Airport will be a “state-of-the-art, 21st Century airport of which every Maldivian can be proud.”

Examining photographs of the new terminal building – released to the public for the first time - the President said the new airport will “create jobs, bring in new investments for the country, improve services for passengers and allow tourism to expand.”

The government awarded the contract for building and operating the new airport to Malaysia Airports Holdings and GMR Group, after a competitive tendering process, overseen by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation.

Malaysia Airports Holdings operate 59 airports, including Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which many aviation experts consider to be one of the best airports in the world.

Malaysia Airports Holdings has worked with India’s GMR Group for over seven years. The two firms designed, built and now manage Hyderabad’s new international airport. Malaysia Airports Holdings and GMR Group also manage Istanbul International Airport and next month will unveil Delhi’s new international airport.

“This is the culmination of an 18 month process to find an appropriate partner to manage the airport. We are very happy with the way the bidding process was carried out. The process was open, honest, transparent and competitive and the World Bank and international lawyers oversaw the process from start to finish,” said Mifzal Ahmed of Invest Maldives.

“GMR Group will build the new terminal and Malaysia Airports will operate and manage the new airport for 25 years. However, the airport will still remain the property of the Maldivian people. The Maldives National Defense Force will provide security and the government will retain control over which aircraft can land at the airport,” said Mifzal.

“The new airport will allow for more flights, reduce overcrowding and speed up airport check in. The new airport terminal will include a piazza with new shops, cafes and restaurants that everyone can enjoy. New transport links also mean that people living in Hulhumale’ will be able to drive to the airport in just five minutes,” Mifzal added.

Malaysia Airports Holdings and GMR Group will invest over US$400 million in the new airport, which is due to be completed in 2014.

Arab-American from Michigan crowned 2010 Miss USA

LAS VEGAS — A 24-year-old Arab American from Michigan beat out 50 other women to take the 2010 Miss USA title Sunday night, despite nearly stumbling in her evening gown.
Rima Fakih of Dearborn, Mich., won the pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip after strutting confidently in an orange and gold bikini, wearing a strapless white gown that resembled a wedding dress and saying health insurance should cover birth control pills.
When asked how she felt about winning the crown, she said, "Ask me after I've had a pizza."
Fakih, a Lebanese immigrant, told pageant organizers her family celebrates both Muslim and Christian faiths. She moved to the United States as a baby and was raised in New York, where she attended a Catholic school. Her family moved to Michigan in 2003.
Pageant officials said historical pageant records were not detailed enough to show whether Fakih was the first Arab American, Muslim or immigrant to win the Miss USA title. The pageant started in 1952 as a local bathing suit competition in Long Beach, Calif.
Fakih told reporters she sold her car after graduating college in Michigan to help pay for her run in the Miss Michigan USA pageant.

She said she believed she had the title on Sunday after glancing at pageant owner Donald Trump as she awaited the results with the first runner-up, Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard.
"That's the same look that he gives them when he says, 'You're hired,'" on Trump's reality show "The Apprentice," she said.
"She's a great girl," said Trump, who owns the pageant with NBC in a joint venture.
In a moment that was replayed during the broadcast, Fakih nearly fell while finishing her walk in her gown because of the length of its train. But she made it without a spill and went on to win.
"I did it here, I better not do it at Miss Universe," she said. "Modeling does help, after all."
Fakih replaces Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton and won a spot representing the United States this summer in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. She also gets a one-year lease in a New York apartment with living expenses, an undisclosed salary, and various health, professional and beauty services.
During the interview portion, Fakih was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should because it's costly.
"I believe that birth control is just like every other medication even though it's a controlled substance," Fakih said.
Woolard handled the night's toughest question, about Arizona's new immigration law. Woolard said she supports the law, which requires police enforcing another law to verify a person's immigration status if there's "reasonable suspicion" that the person is in the country illegally.
She said she's against illegal immigration but is also against racial profiling.
"I'm a huge believer in states' rights. I think that's what's so wonderful about America," Woolard said. "So I think it's perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law."
"The Office" actor Oscar Nunez was booed as he asked the question and asked the audience to wait until he finished the question before they reacted. The panel of judges came up with the questions themselves.
Miss Virginia USA Samantha Evelyn Casey was the second runner-up, Miss Colorado USA Jessica Hartman was third runner-up, and Miss Maine USA Katherine Ashley Whittier was the fourth runner-up.
Most of the field of contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia were eliminated just after the pageant began and the entire group danced onstage to "TiK ToK" by Ke$ha.
A panel of eight judges, including NBA star Carmelo Anthony, Treasure Island casino-hotel owner Phil Ruffin and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, were judging the girls throughout the night.
After 15 contestants strutted in swimsuits, five were eliminated. Another five were eliminated after the evening gown competition.
Miss Nebraska USA Belinda Renee Wright won the Miss Congeniality award, roughly one week after her father was killed in a farm accident. Miss Alabama USA Audrey Moore won Miss Photogenic after an online fan vote.
The pageant aired live to East Coast viewers on NBC.
The competition, which is not affiliated with the Miss America pageant, was hosted by celebrity chef Curtis Stone and NBC correspondent Natalie Morales.
