Superfoods: The Next Frontier

No longer, thanks to research that's shifting the spotlight to a new generation of health-boosting foods—many of which do double or triple duty to help prevent illness. Here are six on the brink of superstar status.

1. Pomegranate

If you're going to have a martini, at least make it a pomegranate one. This fall fruit has higher antioxidant activity than red wine and green tea, which may be why a number of studies show it may prevent skin cancer and kill breast and prostate cancer cells. It also helps to:
Promegranate
Fight Alzheimer's disease Researchers at Loma Linda University found that mice who drank pomegranate juice experienced 50 percent less brain degeneration than animals that consumed only sugar water. The pomegranate drinkers also did better in mazes and tests as they aged.
Guard your arteries A group of diabetics who drank about 2 ounces of pomegranate juice a day for three months kept their bodies from absorbing bad cholesterol into their immune system cells (a major contributing factor to hardened arteries), discovered Israeli researchers.

2. Kiwifruit

Don't judge this fruit by its cover: Under that bristly brown peel you'll find a bright green star bursting with antioxidants and full of fiber. Kiwifruit works to:
Kiwi
Protect against free radical damage
A study from Rutgers University compared the 27 most popular fruits and determined that kiwifruit was the most nutritionally dense. Plus, it makes the short list of fruits with substantial amounts of vitamin E, and contains more vision-saving lutein than any other fruit or vegetable, except for corn.
Lower blood-clot risk
In a 2004 study from the University of Oslo in Norway, participants who ate two or three kiwis for 28 days significantly reduced their potential to form a clot. They also got a bonus benefit: Their triglycerides, a blood fat linked to heart attack, dropped by 15 percent.

3. Barley

When some whole grains, such as wheat and oats, are processed, they lose their fiber content. Not so with barley, which is full of soluble beta-glucan fiber in its whole kernel or refined flour form. Studies show this particular fiber may:
Barley
Knock down bad cholesterol by as much as 17.4 percent, according to USDA research
A 2004 study found that adults with moderately high cholesterol levels who went on a low-fat American Heart Association diet began to see an improvement only when barley was added to the menu.
Decrease blood sugar and insulin levels
That makes barley a better choice for people with type 2 diabetes, says a 2005 Agricultural Research Services study.

4. Cranberries

This born-and-bred American berry is among the top 10 antioxidant-rich foods, making it a potent cancer protector. You know it helps prevent urinary tract infection, and perhaps you heard it prevents gum disease, too, but did you know that these beneficial berries may:
Cranberries
Eradicate E. coli
Compounds in the juice can actually alter antibiotic-resistant strains, making it impossible for the harmful bacteria to trigger an infection. A small pilot study from Harvard Medical School and Rutgers University found that eating about 1/3 cup of dried cranberries yielded the same effect.
Help prevent strokes
Research on pigs with a genetic predisposition to atherosclerosis—narrow, hardened arteries that may lead to heart attack and stroke—found that those fed dried cranberries or juice every day had healthier, more flexible blood vessels

5. Broccoli sprouts

Yes, we've been through this: broccoli, good. The news: Broccoli sprouts are even better. At a mere 3 days old, they contain at least 20 times as much of disease-fighting sulforaphane glucosinolate (SGS) as their elders. SGS has been shown to:
Brocolli
Kill tumors
The chemical triggers enzymes in the body that either kill cancer cells or keep them from growing. Just 1 ounce of sprouts has as much SGS as 1 1/4 pounds of broccoli. That'll save you lots of chewing.
Protect your heart
A Japanese pilot study found people who ate about a half cup a day of sprouts lowered their total cholesterol by an average of 15 points. And women in the study raised their good cholesterol by 8 points—in just 1 week.
Save your sight
Exposure to UV sunlight over time may lead to an eye condition called macular degeneration, which is the number-one cause of blindness in U.S. seniors. Researchers at Johns Hopkins determined that broccoli sprouts can protect retinal cells from ultraviolet light damage.

6. Kefir

This cultured milk drink stacks up in calcium—one 8-ounce serving contains 30 percent of the recommended daily intake. It also contains more beneficial bacteria than yogurt. It may also:
Kefir
Reduce food allergies
Baby mice fed kefir had a threefold reduction in the amount of an antibody linked to food allergies, say researchers at an agricultural university.
Battle breast cancer
Women age 50 and older who consumed fermented milk products had a lower risk than those who ate little or none.
Avoid triggering lactose intolerance
Kefir contains lactase, the enzyme that people with lactose intolerance are missing, say researchers at Ohio State University. And the taste? Like plain yogurt, just a little thinner.

Entire Maldives cabinet resigns

Nasheed's privatisation plans have failed to win the approval of opposition MPs [AFP]
The Maldives' entire cabinet has resigned en masse after the opposition threatened to bring a parliamentary vote of no confidence against every minister.

The 13-member cabinet said on Tuesday that it could no longer work with the opposition-controlled majlis, or parliament, the office of Mohamed Nasheed, the president, announced on Tuesday.
"The majlis is preventing cabinet ministers from performing their legal obligations," Nasheed said in a statement.

"Majlis members are behaving against the spirit and the letter of the constitution."

Nasheed will remain in office despite the resignation of his cabinet.
Husnu Suood, the attorney general, said it was becoming difficult to govern the archipelago in the Indian Ocean.

"Every passing week, there is another attempt by opposition MPs to wrestle more control from the executive," Suood said.

"They are making the country ungovernable."
There was no immediate comment from the opposition on the resignations.
Privatisation plans

The opposition has resisted an ambitious privatisation programme proposed by Nasheed, who came to power in 2008 as the first democratically elected leader in the Indian Ocean atoll nation known for its upmarket tourism.
"The cabinet was fed up," a government official said.

"They could not make any headway with the parliament which was out to block them at every step of the way. They threatened to bring no confidence motions against every minister."
He said a motion was to be taken up Wednesday against one of the ministers and the mass resignation had blocked the move. Political sources said Nasheed could re-appoint the cabinet.
Nasheed's Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) enjoys the support of a maximum of 32 MPs in the 77-member assembly, while the opposition Maldivian People's Party (DRP) has more than 40.
The DRP of former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has remained the largest single party even though he lost to Nasheed in the 2008 elections.
Nasheed's popularity at home has waned as he struggles in the face of parliamentary resistance to deliver promised political and economic changes.
Endangered nation

Nasheed's profile abroad has soared, however, thanks to stunts aimed at attracting global attention to global warming and its impact on the islands of his low-lying nation.
In October last year, Nasheed and the government held a widely-publicised underwater cabinet meeting to highlight their plight ahead of the UN conference on climate change in Copenhagen.
More than 80 per cent of the country's land, composed of coral islands scattered over an area about 850km across the equator, is less than one metre above sea level.
The executive and the legislature in the Maldives are elected directly by the people at two separate polls.

Nasheed's term ends in October 2013 while the parliament can be in office until May 2014.

Male’ International Airport will be a “state-of-the-art, 21st Century airport of which every Maldivian can be proud

29/6/2010- President Nasheed has said that the new Male’ International Airport will be a “state-of-the-art, 21st Century airport of which every Maldivian can be proud.”

Examining photographs of the new terminal building – released to the public for the first time - the President said the new airport will “create jobs, bring in new investments for the country, improve services for passengers and allow tourism to expand.”

The government awarded the contract for building and operating the new airport to Malaysia Airports Holdings and GMR Group, after a competitive tendering process, overseen by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation.

Malaysia Airports Holdings operate 59 airports, including Kuala Lumpur International Airport, which many aviation experts consider to be one of the best airports in the world.

Malaysia Airports Holdings has worked with India’s GMR Group for over seven years. The two firms designed, built and now manage Hyderabad’s new international airport. Malaysia Airports Holdings and GMR Group also manage Istanbul International Airport and next month will unveil Delhi’s new international airport.

“This is the culmination of an 18 month process to find an appropriate partner to manage the airport. We are very happy with the way the bidding process was carried out. The process was open, honest, transparent and competitive and the World Bank and international lawyers oversaw the process from start to finish,” said Mifzal Ahmed of Invest Maldives.

“GMR Group will build the new terminal and Malaysia Airports will operate and manage the new airport for 25 years. However, the airport will still remain the property of the Maldivian people. The Maldives National Defense Force will provide security and the government will retain control over which aircraft can land at the airport,” said Mifzal.

“The new airport will allow for more flights, reduce overcrowding and speed up airport check in. The new airport terminal will include a piazza with new shops, cafes and restaurants that everyone can enjoy. New transport links also mean that people living in Hulhumale’ will be able to drive to the airport in just five minutes,” Mifzal added.

Malaysia Airports Holdings and GMR Group will invest over US$400 million in the new airport, which is due to be completed in 2014.
