New concept at Maldives
They say: eating tuna gives good brains …. I would like to find out, in particular of course about the Maldives
We need some help, from you, but just some brain-storming
As you could figure out somewhere else on this Couchsurfing, Hospitality Club wants to bring lower-budget tourists to Maldives.
Sun, water, sea, beach … it’s freely available, but not every potential tourist can afford – or wants to do so – the expenses of staying in a resort. These are beautiful places, with excellent services, kind of heaven on earth … though only accessible for the better off “angles” for such heaven …
We think that more people like to come as tourists to Maldives, that there are different people who are interested in, that there are quite a number of lower-budget tourists who could make it for the Maldivian paradise
That leads to the inhabited islands, where tourism like that could also contribute to local economic and thus social development
So, we will try to convince tourists to join us in Maldives. To come to Malé by regular flights, booked by themselves, on our tips and advice.
From arrival we’ll take care of them. One night staying (any choice), and then transport to Noonu Velidhoo.
For the staying : we will talk to the Ministry of Tourism about the idea of ‘home staying’.
It would be a new concept for the Maldives and already in use since many years in most of European countries. It is an inexpensive alternative for staying in resorts or (star)hotels. Simply because those options are too expensive for this kind of tourists.
Alternative staying could be in a local guesthouse – which come also available in Noonu Velidhoo soon.
Next and major point: what are these tourists going to DO in Velidhoo?
Tourist facilities or holiday activities are not too much available … though we must assure the tourists that we have enough time pass activities for our tourists, to avoid they would get ‘bored’ because of not that much happening. Let’s be realistic.
So, our tourists stay in a decent room with attached bathroom. For their breakfast and other meals (if included in their package) the tourists come to resto bistro Mama Mia.
Next to that, we have to offer them “things to do” in the time they have available, next to “eating, sleeping, shitting” – another saying in Noonu Velidhoo
The sun, sea, water, beaches are there, and we will have a boat and guys who can manage these things.
So, we have been thinking to offer the tourists in Velidhoo ‘activities’ like :
free non-paying activities
•beach and sun bathing – clean beach, refreshers available
•swimming – instructor can be hired
•we provide a map of Velidhoo with ‘to do’ and ‘to see’, like all shops and other cafeteria, fisher men, …. seasonal festivities, local culture, …
•"meet the locals” – we organise a meeting with a family at home, local youth, mosque, school, …
paying activities like:
(We’ll have a boat and qualified locals to manage that, Ahmed, Muaz and others, also trainees)
- Snorkeling – day and night time
- Big game fishing
- Night fishing
- Sun set and dolphin cruise
- Sun rise …
- Daily trips to uninhabited islands
..
But we still feel we should look for more, different, alternative ideas.
So, we need your help, your brain storming
Consider this list above, and give us more ideas about what we could offer to tourists on the islands of Maldives.
“If at first the idea is not absurd, then there is no hope for it.” - Albert Einstein, not me
Any contribution is welcome. All ideas will be considered. Ideas can lead to different thoughts.
Feel free, let us know.

Maldives ready for “tentative” Akon concert on April 23, 2010
Akon has found a new country to host the Sri Lankan concert he was forced to abandon last week following a protest by local Buddhists - he will now play the planned show in the Maldives. The "Smack That" singer was due to perform in Colombo on April 24 but the date was scrapped when Buddhist activists staged an angry protest against a sacrilegious video outside the headquarters of the promoters - prompting immigration authorities to cancel the star's visa.
The activists were upset after spotting scantily-clad women dancing in front of a Buddha statue in Akon's new video "Sexy Chick". Akon apologized for the furore, insisting he had no idea about the statue and was unaware he had offended religious groups. But he was still forced to accept the date would never take place.
Now, however, the star's planned date has been saved thanks to government officials in the Maldives after they reached out to the singer with the proposal. Akon's rep has yet to officially comment on the reports but President Mohamed Nasheed's press secretary Mohamed Zuhair claims the hitmaker has accepted the offer to play in the Maldives.
Zuhair says, "We are very happy he is planning to come and perform." The concert is scheduled to take place a day earlier than planned, on April 23.
AKON Personal life
He was born in St. Louis, Missouri instead of Senegal because his family didn't want to have to go through immigration problems and so he and his siblings could get a better education. He has been in jail for a total of five years. In late 2005, his manager Robert Montanez was killed in a drive by shooting, the album Konvicted is dedicated to him. Akon was also in the car and was shot in the shoulder, however he made a full recovery. He is a Muslim, and cites his religion for his polygamist lifestyle; he has three wives. He drives an orange Lamborghini Gallardo. He also has his own charity for underpriviliged children in Africa called United For Africa.[citation needed] Akon also owns a diamond mine in South Africa and denies the existence of conflict diamonds, noting in an interview with the British Independent, "I don't even believe in conflict diamonds...That's just a movie. Think about it. Ain't nobody thought about nothing about no conflict diamonds until the movie came out." Although he had a previous occupation as a drug dealer, he states that he has never used drugs. He also states that in spite of his previous criminal history he has turned his life around, as sung in "Tired Of Runnin" more details
The first solar eclipse of 2010 will occur in the Maldives on 15 th January 2010
First Solar Eclipse of 2010
The first solar eclipse of 2010 will occur at the Moon’s ascending node in western Sagittarius.
Annular Eclipse
An annular eclipse will be visible from a 300-km-wide track that traverses central Africa, the Indian Ocean and eastern Asia.
Partial Eclipse
A partial eclipse will be seen within the much broader path of the Moon’s penumbral shadow, which includes Eastern Europe, most of Africa, Asia, and Indonesia.
Annular Path of 2010 Solar Eclipse
The annular path of the 2010 solar eclipse begins in westernmost Central African Republic at 05:14 UT. Because the Moon passes through apogee two days later (Jan 17 at 01:41 UT), its large distance from Earth produces an unusually wide path of annularity. Traveling eastward, the shadow quickly sweeps through Uganda, Kenya, and southern Somalia, while the central line duration of annularity grows from 7 to 9 minutes.
For the next two hours, the antumbra crosses the Indian Ocean, its course slowly curving from east-southeast to northeast. The instant of greatest eclipse occurs at 07:06:33 UT when the eclipse magnitude will reach 0.9190. At this instant, the duration of annularity is 11 minutes 8 seconds, the path width is 333 kilometers and the Sun is 66° above the flat horizon formed by the open ocean. Such a long annular duration will not be exceeded for over 1000 years (3043 Dec 23).
First Solar Eclipse of 2010 in Maldives
The central track continues northeast where it finally encounters land in the Maldive Islands (07:26 UT).The capital city Male experiences an annular phase lasting 10 minutes 45 seconds This is the longest duration of any city having an international airport in the eclipse track.
First Solar Eclipse of 2010 in India & Northern Sri Lanka
When the antumbra reaches Asia, the central line passes directly between the southern tip of India and northern Sri Lanka (07:51 UT). Both regions lie within the path where maximum annularity lasts 10 minutes 15 seconds quickly sweeping over the Bay of Bengal the shadow reaches Burma where the central line duration is 8 minutes 48 seconds and the Sun’s altitude is 34°.
First Solar Eclipse of 2010 in China
By 08:41 UT, the central line enters China. The shadow crosses the Himalayas through Yunnan and Sichuan provinces Chongqing lies directly on the central line and witnesses’ duration of 7 minutes 50 seconds with the Sun 15° above the horizon. Racing through parts of Shaanxi and Hubei provinces, the antumbra’s speed increases as the duration decreases. In its final moments, the antumbra travels down the Shandong Peninsula and leaves Earth’s surface (08:59 UT).Copyright © 2004 & 2007 Ibrahim Mohamed! Inc. All rights reserved.e-mail:ibumohd@gmail.com

World’s first ever underwater cabinet meeting concludes in the Maldives
World’s first ever underwater cabinet meeting concludes in the Maldives

The country, a collection of atolls and islands in the Indian Ocean, stands less than two metres above sea level, and as climate change causes seas to rise it will probably be the first nation to sink beneath the waves.
Under the threat of that looming watery Armageddon, President Mohamed Nasheed has announced plans to hold a cabinet meeting under the sea, ahead of the UN climate change conference in Copenhagen this December.
Ministers clad in wetsuits and shouldering compressed-air tanks, will meet about 20ft (6m) underwater on 17 October. They will communicate through hand gestures, according to Aminath Shauna, an official from the president's office.
"It is to send a message to the world. The intention is to draw the attention of the world leaders to the issue of global warming and highlight how serious are the threats faced by Maldives as a result," she said. "If we can stop climate change, the lowest-lying nation on earth will be saved." The gathering will take place off the island of Girifushi, which lies about 20 minutes' journey by speedboat from the capital, Male. One minister has already had to pull out: scuba instructors said the education minister was not fit enough to take on the dive.
After his election last year, Nasheed raised the possibility of buying a new homeland for the country's 396,000 residents with the hundreds of millions of dollars that tourists spend.Earlier this year, he announced that the Maldives would stop using fossil fuels by 2020. The president is also committed to converting an atoll into a UN-protected biosphere to preserve the unique wildlife and fauna found on the 1,100 islands. Officials say that underwater meetings should not become future fixture of Maldives democracy. For this meeting, the documents will be sheathed in water-proof plates pinned to the table. "If it were to go on the paperwork would be very, very challenging," said one official.
• This article was amended on 8 October 2009. The original said that the ministers would be using oxygen tanks. This has been corrected.

350 & Maldives at 24th Oc tober 2009
350.org is an international campaign dedicated to building a movement to unite the world around solutions to the climate crisis.
Its mission is to inspire the world to rise to the challenge of the climate crisis—to create a new sense of urgency and of possibility for our planet.
Its focus is on the number 350--as in parts per million (ppm), the level scientists have identified as the safe upper limit for CO2 in our atmosphere. The current level is 389 ppm.
On 24th October 2009 350.org is cordinating an International Day of Climate Action in order to unite the public, media and political leaders behind the 350 goal. By having actions all around the world that day, 350.org plans to send a clear message to the world leaders (who will be meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark this December to craft a new global treaty on cutting emissions) that 'the solutions to climate change must be equitable, they must be grounded in science, and they must meet the scale of the crisis.'
- "350 Maldives 2009" event organized by ECOCARE Maldives in affiliation with the Scouts Association of Maldives will be hosting number of events including:
- 350 Balloon's floating in midair with the number "350" lit on it
- Maldivian cultural music session with awareness programs
- Ground 350 motor vehicles (cars and motor bikes)
- Cut down energy consumption of the capital island Male' by 350KW
- "350 Prayers" - 350 people reciting Quran and praying to God to save our environment
- "Below 350" - An underwater demonstration by scuba divers and snorklers joining hands to show their support to reduce atmospheric carbondioxide to safer levels
- "Operation Life Raft 350" – a raft made from empty PET water bottles to be rowed from Male' to Hulhule, trying to create awareness in ways to reduce, reuse and recylce in order to achieve the 350 balance.
In addition, the Maldives Photographers Association together with the Maldives Science Society is planning to send 350 unique postcards to 350 world leaders and personalities who will be attending the Copenhagen conference (COP15).
These actions from the Maldives will be part of more than 1400 currently registered actions from 111 countries happening on 24th October 2009.
If an international grassroots movement holds the world leaders accountable to the latest climate science, we can start the global transformation we so desperately need.

R.I.P Michael Jackson (We Miss You)
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/31555243/displaymode/1176/rstry/31552029/
LOS ANGELES - Michael Jackson, defined in equal parts as the world’s greatest entertainer and perhaps its most enigmatic figure, was about to attempt one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Then his life was cut shockingly — and so far, mysteriously — short.
The 50-year-old musical superstar died Thursday, just as he was preparing for what would be a series of 50 concerts starting July 13 at London’s famed 02 arena. Jackson had been spending hours and hours toiling with a team of dancers for a performance he and his fans hoped would restore his tarnished legacy to its proper place in pop.
An autopsy was planned for Friday, though results were not likely to be final until toxicology tests could be completed, a process that could take several days and sometimes weeks. However, if a cause can be determined by the autopsy, they will announce the results, said Los Angeles County Coroner Investigator Jerry McKibben.

A Floating Paradise: Wally Yachts’ 325-Foot Maldiveland
The enormous aft deck has been designed to house two 45-foot WallyPower tender yachts, other yachts, and watertoys.
Surprisingly, Wally has designed its giggayacht to be pocketbook friendly for its size; the company claims that WallyIsland will cost about as much as a traditional 200’ yacht. Unfortunately, with a fuel capacity just shy of 200,00 gallons, filling up is going to be another story.
