Bukit Aman- KL

Kuala Lumpur

Bukit Aman- KL

KL, if you're stuck in the 20th century, is home to the tallest buildings in the world. The Petronas Towers are a shining example of what is possible with unlimited vision, the will to achieve, and large helpings of taxpayers' money. Truly, I have to admit that a more splendid, skyline-defining giant H would be hard to find.

In any case, I'm sure you'll agree that they look better than those other twin towers did.

The twin corncobs

A couple of views of Malaysia's rubberstamp Federal Court, located in the Sultan Abdul Samad building. It was in front of this building that the glorious 1999 people's revolution (brought to you in 24-bit colour by international sponsors AOL Time Warner, Fox, and the International Monetary Fund) took place.

Federal Court of Malaysia

A beautiful white fence

The rubberstamp Federal Court is located directly across the old Padang (green, now called Dataran Merdeka, or Independence Square) from the Royal Selangor Club, one of those timeless bastions of Empire. You know it's timeless by how GURLS aren't allowed in the bar.

Royal Selangor Club

And here's a view of the Dataran Merdeka itself. Back in the old days, they used to play cricket on this ground (last recorded result: Bukit Aman Second XI bt England by an innings and 496 runs; England selectors vow sweeping changes).

Big green field

Under the Dataran itself is a massive carpark, shopping arcade, food court and center for operations for the Illuminati fnord. Don't try to find them; they'll find you. Also, there are no Al-Qaeda operatives in the Federal Court, the Royal Selangor Club, or under the Dataran Merdeka.

The Royal Selangor Club isn't the only remnant of Empire to be found in KL. There's also the Royal Lake Club, located next to the Lake Gardens near the city center. You can tell this is the British Empire we're talking about, because only the British could have come up with such BORING names.

As you might have heard, Malaysia will soon be home to a regional counterterrorism training center to be operated in conjunction with certain foreign nations. In the meantime, few are aware that these operators are already in the country!!! Here is a contingent of elite United Nations counterterrorist secret agents at the Royal Lake Club. You can't see them? Well, naturally! You don't spend millions of Euros on elite counterterrorist secret agents and FORGET TO TEACH THEM HOW TO REMAIN SECRET, NOW DO YOU?

United Nations spies in training

This training did not go unnoticed by other parties, though. Notice below the Al-Qaeda operatives in the background on the left, trying to look inconspicuous while all the time observing the United Nations personnel. Watching them in turn is a CIA field agent on the right. Again, you can trust me on all of this, because I always check my facts before posting nonsense to web pages.

Espionage is such fun

But enough about bastions of Empire. Some other parts of KL also look like they haven't changed since the 20th century, but not in quite the same way. Petaling Street, for one. Walking past an open shopfront, I was assailed by an overpowering smell, redolent with the stench of corruption and decay, as of thousands of voices crying out suddenly in alarm... oh hang on, that's Star Wars Episode I: the Phantom Menace. Never mind.

Traffic in Petaling Street is almost, but not quite, less chaotic than traffic elsewhere in KL. There are no Al-Qaeda operatives in these pictures, as far as I can ascertain (although that red trashcan loitering around looks damn suspicious, if you ask me).

A highly suspicious red trashcan

Not a highly suspicious red trashcan

Petaling Street is KL's Chinatown (to the extent you can have a "Chinatown" in a country that's 30% Chinese), and what better place than Chinatown for a Hindu temple? The Sri Maha Mariamman temple has been here, tending to the needs of the Chinese Hindu faithful, for centuries.

A quick search of the interior showed it was clear of Al-Qaeda operatives...

No Al-Qaeda here

... although a statue of Shiva, also known as "the Destroyer", was found. NOW IS THAT SPOOKY OR WHAT? Some people claim that Shiva's REAL title is "the Transformer", but they are obviously being silly. WHICH KIND OF TRANSFORMER? is the question I want to put to these people! AUTOBOT, OR DECEPTICON? HA!

I think it's time for a drinks..;P.

Bin Laden accuses pope of ‘crusade’ in new tape

updated 2:42 p.m. ET March 20, 2008
Image: Osama bin Laden
Osama bin Laden, seen in a 1998 photo, complains in a new audio message that drawings of the Prophet Muhammad published by Danish and other newspapers were part of a "crusade" in which the Catholic pope was involved.

CAIRO, Egypt - Osama bin Laden accused Pope Benedict XVI of helping in a "new crusade" against Islam and warned of a "severe" reaction to European publications of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad that insulted many Muslims.

Bin Laden's new audiotape message raised concerns al-Qaida was plotting new attacks in Europe. Some experts said bin Laden, believed to be in hiding in the rugged Afghan-Pakistan border area, may be unable to organize an attack himself and instead is trying to fan anger and inspire his supporters to violence. read more from yahoo news

Poor and Rich - The Facts

DEFINING POVERTY...

Absolute poverty is defined according to an absolute minimum standard, often called the ‘poverty line’. Relative poverty means that you are poor in relation to those around you. Income poverty (‘less than a dollar a day’, for example), means that you are poor if you have less money than the defined poverty line for your country. Human poverty takes into account other factors, such as life expectancy, infant malnutrition, illiteracy and lack of food or clean water. Basic needs definitions also go beyond money, to include all the things that a person needs in order to survive – including employment and participation in society.

MEASURING POVERTY...

Measuring poverty is always a problem, especially if you recognize that just using money is not enough. There are a number of new measurements emerging, like the Index of Sustainable Economic Welfare.1 This measures ‘quality’ economic activity by, for example, making a subtraction for air pollution and an addition for unpaid household labour.

Another method is the Human Poverty Index. This is ranked according to three main areas of deprivation: survival; knowledge and a decent standard of living. In the industrial world, where the Index also includes social exclusion, some 7 to 17% of the populations are classified as poor. The higher the percentage figure, the greater the poverty in that country. read more

BARBIE, that plastic icon of girlhood fantasy play, is routinely tortured by children, research has found.

The methods of mutilation are varied and creative, ranging from scalping to decapitation, burning, breaking and even microwaving, according to academics from the University of Bath.

The findings were revealed as part of an in-depth look by psychologists and management academics into the role of brands among 7 to 11-year-old schoolchildren.

The researchers had not intended to focus on Barbie, but they were taken aback by the rejection, hatred and violence she provoked when they asked the children about their feelings for the doll.

Violence and torture against Barbie were repeatedly reported across age, school and gender. No other toy or brand name provoked such a negative response. read more

Love on the Vox

Huge congratulations to Voxers Miss Scotch and Papi Chulo who recently got engaged. These two have been around from the very beginnings of Vox, as Papi Chulo (a.k.a. Steve) is a member of Team Vox and Miss Scotch was one of Vox's original beta testers from way back in 2006. So it was only natural for the both of them to document their engagement story here on Vox!

The first announcement came from Papi Chulo, via a mobile post straight from the scene. He snapped a photo of Miss Scotch and sent it to his Vox blog in seconds, letting all his friends and family know the good news right away. A picture's worth a thousand words, indeed. Doesn't she look ecstatic?

Then Miss Scotch updated us with her side of the story, recounting how he popped the question and calling it the happiest moment of her life so far.

A little while later, Papi Chulo posted his version of the engagement story too. He pointed out highlights of their weekend and also speculated on the worldwide benefits reaped from their union.

Altogether their posts and photos have collected nearly 200 comments so far. Feel free to stop by and add your thoughts and well wishes. Congratulations and best of luck to the happy couple! read more

Japan successfully launches high-speed Internet satellite

TOKYO (AFP) — Japan successfully launched Saturday an experimental satellite aimed at providing high-speed Internet access across Asia, even when terrestrial infrastructure goes down, the space agency said.

The domestically developed H-2A rocket carrying the Kizuna satellite was launched at 17:55 pm (0855 GMT) with no glitches from the Space Centre on Tanegashima island off the southern tip of Kyushu Island, southern Japan.

The communications satellite, expected to be in use for five years, separated from the rocket approximately 35 minutes after the launch, said an official of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) during a live broadcast.

The 342 million dollar-Kizuna will allow super-high speed data communications of up to 1.2 Gbps, which would make it the fastest in the world, the agency said.

That rate would translate to 150 times that of the average high-speed ADSL connection rate of 8 Mbps, or 12 times the speed of a fibre-optic communication delivery to a person's premises (FTTP).

The "Kizuna," which also means "bond" in Japanese, is expected to begin transmitting and receiving data with terrestrial infrastructures in July after completing preparations and confirming the satellite's safety.

Japan is looking to use the satellite to allow communication when a ground-based network is severed by a disaster in any Asian country, in which case it would be used to transmit data to crisis management offices.

The agency is hoping it can also be used as an educational or medical tool to reach people in remote or mountainous areas.

"The Internet is now an integral part of our lives; but its infrastructure levels vary. Urban areas ... have a better environment, whereas some mountainous regions and remote islands are not well-equipped," JAXA said on its website.--read more

It was really great meeting all the folks who came out. I especially enjoyed meeting Nazee, Simon Shareef, Chospatis, Afu, John & Ahmed Zahid who were 06 people.

We started around 07:30AM Maldives Capital city -Male' east beach side (Parking area) and then walked some specific road of the City (Simon was our compass). It really was about the best way possible to spend early morning (without breakfast). If I could be doing anything in the world all day long it's taking photos and it's especially great when hanging out with other like minded photowalkers. Thanks for great breakfast! :-)P:

The essence of water

Water is the key to survive
The treasured sea of pure life

We bath and we use water
Or risk emitting a nasty odour
Like one emerging from the gutter

When we are thirsty, we drink water
Otherwise sooner commit the do-it-yourself murder

While we cook, we introduce and include water
Whether we use temperatures that are colder or hotter

Everywhere you can see its presence
Glittering with an air of essence

When I am sad, I cry water
When it rains, it pours water
When I clean, I employ water
When I play, I apply water
When I am sick, I pee water
And I look at the sea and see water

Put together all men, women and children
In no chronological order
Water is still much stronger
In its simple form of oxygen and hydrogen

Siouxsie and The Banshees - Face To Face

Face to face -- my lovely foe
Mouth to mouth -- raining heaven's blows
Hand on heart -- tic tac toe
Under the stars -- naked as we flow

Cheek to cheek -- the bitter sweet
Commit your crime in your deadly time
It's too divine -- I want to bend
I want this bliss but something says I must resist

Another life -- another time
We're Siamese twins writhing intertwined
Face to face -- no telling lies
The masks they slide to reveal a new disguise
You never can win -- it's the state I'm in
This danger thrills and my conflict kills
They say follow your heart -- follow it through
[Face To Face lyrics on http://www.metrolyrics.com]

But how can you -- when you're split in two?

And you'll never know
You'll never know, you'll never know

One more kiss -- before we die
Face to face -- and dream of flying
Who are you? -- Who am I?
Wind in wings -- two angels falling
To die like this -- with a last kiss
It's falsehood's flame -- it's a crying shame
Face to face -- the passions breathe
I hate to stay but then I hate to leave

And you'll never know, No, you'll never know
You'll never know, you'll never know, you'll never know

Thus he wishes and pleases to accept his present life.

Rinspeed sQuba Diving Concept Car

Thirty years after the movie thriller ‘The Spy Who Loved Me’ hit the silver screen “sQuba” is the first car that can actually ‘fly’ under water.

“Dive it again, James!” If the situation gets too hot for the secret agent he’ll go underground - or under water. So demonstrated impressively by Roger Moore in ‘The Spy Who Loved Me” in 1977 when he dove below the waves in a sleek vehicle that moments before seemed to be an ordinary car. Soak up and the amazing sights
And do some sunset thinking!
